ODU SAMPE Student Chapter
ODU SAMPE Student Chapter
The Old Dominion University Society for the Advancement of Material Process Engineering (SAMPE) Student Chapter is focused on advancing student engagement in composite materials and manufacturing through hands-on technical development and industry collaboration. As part of SAMPE, the chapter connects students with professionals and organizations working in aerospace, defense, and advanced manufacturing.
The organization emphasizes practical experience alongside academic learning, providing opportunities for students to develop skills in composite design, analysis, and fabrication. Through technical workshops, facility tours, and open house events with local industry partners, members gain direct exposure to real-world engineering environments and manufacturing processes.
In addition to skill development and industry engagement, the chapter is actively building a competitive program to participate in international SAMPE student competitions. These efforts are aimed at establishing a strong foundation in applied composites engineering at ODU while creating a pipeline for students to transition into careers in advanced materials and aerospace systems.
The ODU SAMPE Chapter
The ODU SAMPE Chapter hosts hands-on workshops focused on fundamental and applied composite manufacturing techniques. These sessions are designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice, giving students direct experience with processes used in industry.
A recent workshop series centered on a Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) Mode I crack growth experiment, where students fabricated test specimens and evaluated delamination behavior under controlled loading. Through this process, participants were introduced to the mechanics of fracture in composite laminates and the role of manufacturing quality in structural performance
